After Nine Years -Part 1

Wednesday December 30 2009 05:00:27 AM BDT

By Yousuf, Abulkasham , USA

Are you selfish, greedy or jealous? If not, you may lose human characteristic. Yes, every human has been part of healthy selfishness, healthy greediness, and/or a healthy jealousy, one way or the other. However, sick selfishness, sick greediness, and/or sick jealousy are spreading allover Bangladesh like a wild-fire.

Last time, when I went to Bangladesh in 2000, it was still green all over country specially Dhaka city like an evergreen rain forest. If you born and raised in Gulshan, Badda, or Baridhara, you know, what I am taking about. In my childhood, I saw each road had a few trees and/or each house had a few flowers-beds to shine all year long. Nevertheless, today, I hardly found any trees. Most of the trees were replaced to build high-rising buildings or towers. Is this way, how we will survive in the twenty-first century?

Most people of my age group who are their thirty?s or forty?s are already getting heart disease, or they are wearing a ring. It is a terrifying situation for a nation, but most do not care about it. Furthermore, they do not want to know about it, how it effects their livlihoods and/or their society in a whole. Only thing they all care about ?Money?. Yes, make money or die for money, it is a best deal for them and/or their decedent?s lives. Can money buy anything or everything? How about honesty and/or honor?

I observed that educated people are not willing to do what they have been taught in school, college, or university. Because of family needs, they have been trying to earn money no question asked, period. In my life, I witness that most of our older generations give respect for other older generations as their fore-fathers. As I went to Bangladesh after nine years, I found out that not only do older generations are being part of a huge social unrest, but also they are organizing the major ?Donation Gang? around their areas. As I read Mr. Salah Uddin Shoalb Choudhury?s article ?Bangladesh ? a nation in terror,? it reminded me that the whole country is being terrorized by the people who have been elected by general public, most of them illiterate. So, who are these people and who voted for them?

?When more and more people are becoming the slave of daily needs, they are losing moral character. Ill selfishness, ill greediness, and ill jealousy are progressing in their lives like isonomy in the Bay of Bangle. They are absolutely unaware of what it takes to live daily lives peacefully. People have been electing cadets of ?The Arm Group? or ?The Donation Gang? for the general election. Why?

Therefore, crime-bosses are becoming stronger and wealthier. Ethics, decency, and integrity are fleeing from Bangladesh at the speed of light.
